Pants on the Ground

The Pants on the ground song. Smh. I have to admit that my level of interest in American Idol has dropped big time over the years. Mostly because in the competition section you consistently see the most talented singers get booted by someone with lesser vocal talent. The 2008 & 2009 season were great examples. In 2009, extremely talented singer Adam Lambert was upset by mediocre singer Chris Allen. To me, it’s a singing contest. If the best singer is a martian, then the martian should be the American Idol. So, I don’t look forward to the singer part.

But I do love the auditions. Not for the good singers but to see the weirdos and freaks. The auditions are hilarious. They will have you on the floor rolling around laughing. My favorite American Idol reject of all was Eccentric the Panther. This guy really thought he was a panther for some reason. Which brings us to 2010.

General Larry Platt at the American Idol auditionWho is General Larry Platt?

This years most popular American Idol reject so far is General Larry Platt. Platt is a 62 year old civil rights activist. His accomplishments were appreciated so much by the state of Georgia that they celebrate September 4th as Larry Platt Day. But the world now knows him for his hit song “Pants on the Ground.” Nothing you would expect to hear on Corinne Bailey Rae’s new album but still a “surprise” hit. Platt showed up to an American Idol audition in Atlanta and decided to perform his own original song. It was apparently written about people who wear saggy jeans. What makes it so funny to me is that he’s a 62 year old man, wearing sunglasses, with a black, red and green winter skull cap cocked to the side with matching t-shirt and wristbands. Platt had the judges laughing from his first spin, dance moves and splits (without ripping his pants). You can see Mary J. Blige and Kara cracking up as he performed. It’s one of those things you have to see.

Opportunities

Platt didn’t meet Idol’s under-28-years-old age requirement. But, near the end of Platt’s audition, Simon said “I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit.” He was right. Ever since that audition, Platt has:

  • been called out by Justin Bieber to do a cameo on MY WORLD part 2.
  • adopted and flown out by Minnesota Vikings as their Mascot to perform at their championship game against the New Orleans Saints.
  • appeared on The View on Martin Luther King Jr’s day.
  • been copied by a group name Pants Down Crew who one week later has a version of his song “Pants on the Ground” on iTunes.
  • been parodied by late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon.

Platt’s decision was the equivalent of walking into a party store and walking out with a winning lottery number. This simple act has changed his life. How many elderly still have the courage to try that? Most of the time the difference between success and failure is just trying.

Pants on the Ground,
Pants on the Ground,
looking like a fool
with your pants on the ground.

Talk to me about it in the comments section

Corinne Bailey Rae’s new album

Corinne Bailey Rae's new albumCorinne Bailey Rae’s highly anticipated second album is coming out this month. It’s title “The Sea” and expected to be released on January 26, 2010 (a few weeks before the release of Sade’s new album). According to iTunes, you can pre-order the 13 track album now for $9.99. One of the tracks, “It Be’s That Way Sometime” appears to only be available if you pre-order. Pre-order album automatically download on the day the music is released.

The First Release

The first single is “I’d Do It All Again.” It’s available now for purchase on iTunes. On Corinne Bailey Rae’s website and youtube, you can hear and see the video in it’s entirety. Word is that the death of her husband Jason Rae (who died last year) heavily influenced this album. On her website, she wrote, “’The Sea’, is a collection of songs about grief and hope, despair and inspiration, loss and love..” She was deeply in love with her husband.

Reactions

All the internet reviews confirm that this is a must have album, darker than the first because of the pain she’s felt. But expected to do as well as the first. Corinne is a skilled acoustic guitar player and very talented singer/songwriter. Sounds like an excellent new album for my iPod Touch.

debut albumAccording to Billboard, Rae’s self-titled debut album sold 1.9 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It spent 71 weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 4 in February 2007. Hopefully, this album will top that.

New Look

Corinne Bailey Rae's New LookShe is also sporting a slightly newer look in her performances and video. She went from the girl-next-door look to a well-dressed mature woman. Also, her hair is a lot longer this album. If she’s going to let it grow every album, I hope to see it get a long a rapunzel’s locks.

Under the Radar

Last year, she did a very nice song that didn’t get a lot of attention. Have a listen to a Deniece Williams remake she did with bass player extraordinaire Marcus Miller entitled “Free.” This song is not available any of her albums. It can be found on Marcus Miller’s 2008 album titled “Marcus.”

“The Sea” is in position to be one of 2010′s best albums.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Talk to me.

Which music player to buy?

Which music player to buy? I’ve been a long time Mac user. In fact, I’ve only ever bought Apple computers. My first was the power pc back in the day. So for me when I was deciding which music player to buy, it was an easy progression into the iPod and iTunes because of their ease of use and reliability.

Why do I like it?

iPod TouchIt sounds great, easy to use, has many features and I like the touch screen technology.

Some features that were important to me:
• easy to use
• superior sound quality
• portable
• integrates with iTunes, which has the widest selection of new music at an average price of .99 cents a song or $9.99 an album.
• holds a lot of songs – up to 14,000 songs
• multi-functional – it’s a music player, gaming interface, video player, photo album, web browser, address book and with apps does hundreds of other things, too.
• multi-platform – can be use with Windows or Macintosh.
• radio apps – you can listen to new music to buy later.
• plugs into newer car’s aux jack

Why the 16GB iPod Touch?

I recommend the 16 GB iPod Touch or higher. They sell an 8 GB version but I have used up about 9 GB with all of my music, pictures, videos, podcasts and applications. I have pretty much everything I need on mine and can’t imagine going over 16 GB.

My iPod touch

Being a musician, I use my iPod touch to listen to my favorite music and analyze other styles of music.

But I also use it to practice my guitar and bass. To practice scales and songs to a tempo, I use either a metronome app or a drum beat I created from Logic. To practice ear training, I use the app Karajan to test me on intervals, chords and scales.

At home, I prefer to use my Sony MDR-7506 headphones instead of my ear buds. These headphones have a better, fuller bass.

When I want to play my songs through my home studio speakers while I’m in another room, my iPod Touch has an app for that (heard that before). It’s simply called Remote. From the iPod, I can see my complete library of songs on my computer and when you touch play it plays immediately.

Cons

My 5 year old daughter loves playing games on it just as much as I do. But, I’m not ready to buy her one yet. But I just might have to so I can enjoy mine.

You’ll probably need to get a case for it so it won’t get scratched up. I hear they have a new .99 cent case but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Feel free to share you opinions.

Do I need a producer?

Do I need a producer? There are a lot of artist who are extremely talented at singing, rapping and presenting poetry. These same artists would love to put their work out to sell to the public. The process of putting their work out is not hard. But putting together a project that the public want to hear and buy is another thing. Many artists know their craft but not the intricacies of music production. This is where a really good music producer can make a big difference.

Do I need a producer or not?

If you play all your own instruments, know how to compose and arrange, know how to record and mix, understand mastering and have a hell of an ear, then you may not need a producer. If you don’t, you need a good producer.

Why? you ask

A good producer can give you a great sounding song or album. They can also save you time and money by managing your recording project through their experience.

A good producer is very creative and knows how to give the public something new and interesting. They make your voice and ideas shine in an impressive way on your tracks.

They can save you money in the whole recording process. Many producers play an instrument themselves or work with really good musicians, they work efficiently in the studio and are very tech savvy knowing all computer the equipment, some mix and master themselves or know really good mastering houses.

How do they charge?

Some producers charge a set fee per song, some charge a percentage of records sold, others don’t charge anything and some charge a combination. The ones who don’t charge anything usually just want credit on a published album of a big name artist or to get their name out. They figure the exposure will get them more paying projects in the future. There prices vary.

I’m more of a songwriter/musician who has experience writing tracks for all types of artist in several genres.

When you are looking for a producer, its probably a good idea to listen to their work and try to determine if their style can produce some hit from your project.

Ibanez AEL10LEBK Guitar

Ibanez AEL10LEBK Guitar 1Ibanez AEL10LEBK Guitar

What is it?

It’s a Left Handed Acoustic Electric Guitar made by Ibanez. Because its acoustic, its loud enough to play without an amplifier but you can still plug it up to an amp if you want.

How much does it cost?

I got mine for around $300.

This guitar has a great and really nice full sound. The bass notes are fat and warm and the highs are crisp. I have 7 guitars and this was my first acoustic-electric guitar. it has turned into my favorite. I was surprised to find out that it sounds way better than my electrics guitars. I guess that’s because the sound from the strings gets to ring inside the body and the pickups get to pick up a fuller more acoustic sound. I’ve always played rhythm guitar on an electric guitar and have never seen anyone play R&B rhythm on an acoustic. But rhythm guitar actually sounds better on an acoustic. When I record tracks, it sounds so much better than my electric. It also has and eq slider to cut or boost the highs and lows.

Tuning

This guitar has a built in tuner which it really convenient. The other thing I love about this guitar is that stays in tune way better than any guitar I’ve ever seen. Some days I don’t have to tune it at all. Other days, I might have to slightly tune it.

Care

I keep mine in a humidified room like Ibanez recommends. I clean it with damp cloth. It’s relatively low maintenance.

Pros

• has a built in tuner
• easy to play
• sounds great
• looks great

Cons

• Notes are really hard to bend. I think its because the strings are so thick.

Conclusion:

For the money and the quality, I recommend this guitar to anyone.

Techno Music in 2007 (a Detroit perspective)

This entry is about my observation of Techno Music in the year 2007. I talk about why I’m writing this, how techno music has changed and I compare it to other genres.

I’m writing this because producing techno music is one of my passions. I create techno albums and make them available for digital download. I like this because I get to choose what I think is hot. The other reason I’m writing this is because I began to wonder what happened to the creativity and innovation in Techno Music.

I grew up in Detroit when Techno music started. A DJ named electrifying Mojo used to play hot new music on the radio late at night on the Midnight Funk Association. He didn’t play the regular repetitive radio format that the other DJ’s did. He would play hours of what he knew was hot from the B-52’s to George Clinton to every single song Prince every wrote. Detroiters loved it. Mojo started playing a new sound from Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May records. This was the beginning of Techno Music. The thing I remember loving about Techno music then was that it didn’t sound like anything I had heard before. It was brand new and exciting. Because I’m a bass player, I loved the crazy bass lines on songs like ‘Alleys of your Mind’ and ‘No UFO’s’ or the keyboard vamps on ‘Good Life.’ There were other songs Mojo played that I didn’t know who the artist was or how they created that sound, but it sounded great.

Fast forward to today. Its very rare that I hear any new techno on the radio in the birthplace of techno. Sometimes I hear samples of old techno hits in new hip hop records like Missy, Mob Deep and others. But nothing really new on the radio. Where did our music go? Why did they stop?

Today, I have to search the internet to find new techno music and its just not the same. In my opinion, Techno has lost its funkiness and creativity. Growing up in Detroit, Juan, Kevin and Derrick were influenced by Motown and George Clinton’s P-Funk. You could hear it in their tracks. Mix that with the cutting-edge of Kraftwerk and you have the sound. This is the techno sound I remember and miss.

But why hasn’t Techo Music evolved like other genres like hip hop?

I’m going to briefly touch on some similarities and differences to other genres.

Techno music is similar to Blues in that both genres gave birth to new genres. Blues gave birth to Jazz and Rock. Techno music gave birth to rave, ambient, minimal, trance, DnB, hardcore and IDM.

Techno music is similar to hip hop in that both started from the urban underground from independent labels.

Techno differ from the blues in that new techno artist are not staying true to the important fundamental roots of techno music: creativity and the funk. New Blues artist are forever true to the roots of the blues because they love its art and origin.

Techno differs from hip hop in that the hip hop culture has grown exponentially compared to Techno. Hip hop is being written about in hip hop magazines owned by hip hop labels and artist. Hip hop has created fashion that is owned and influenced my hip hop moguls like Jay Z’s Rocawear and Puffy’s Sean Jean, but not techno. Techno is more about the music and the future and hip hop is about the rapper and his present situation. The big labels have found a way to exploit hip hop for profits. Smaller labels control Techno music.

I feel Techno has not reached its full potential because of these differences. If it ever does turn these differences to similarites, it will be recognized with its own categories at the Grammy’s or American Music Awards just like any other type of music.

In the future, I hope to see Techno Music grow and evolve like all other styles of music, instead of die like Disco.
